O Vao beach or cove belongs to the Umia-O Grove-A Lanzada-Punta Carreirón Intertidal Complex. It is situated at the mouth of the River Umia and the A Lanzada isthmus. The mix of fresh water from the River Umia and the salty Atlantic ocean waves has created a natural area of great ecological wealth. Thousands of birds arrive here every year to overwinter, breed, rest, and feed after their long migratory journeys. The sheer multitude of waders and over-wintering visitors lead to this area gaining international protected status. There are two bird observation huts
