Silleda

Located at an altitude of around 450 metres in the parish of O Castro, the Alto de San Mamede Viewpoint is one of the most attractive natural viewpoints in the municipality of Silleda. This site combines historical heritage, landscape and nature, offering wide panoramic views over the Deza Valley and some of the region’s most iconic landmarks. From its privileged position, visitors can see the Deza River, the Sanctuary of O Corpiño, Mount Carrio, the parish of Saídres, the Castro de Chapa hillfort and the prehistoric burial mounds of Monte dos Escurros Negreiros.

The viewpoint lies just a short distance from the Church of San Mamede and forms part of an easy circular walking route that allows visitors to discover several cultural and scenic attractions in the area.

Its location on the site of the ancient Castro de San Mamede adds significant historical interest, as this Iron Age settlement, inhabited more than two thousand years ago, represents one of the oldest traces of human occupation in the region.

At night, the low levels of light pollution create excellent conditions for stargazing. For this reason, the Alto de San Mamede Viewpoint is part of the “Baixo o Ceo das Rías Baixas” Astrotourism Network, which brings together some of the best places in Pontevedra province for observing the night sky. Here, landscape, history and astronomy combine to offer a truly memorable experience in inland Galicia.
