Vía de la Plata (‘the Silver Route’) is a natural link between the south and northwest of the peninsula. It was originally used as an expansion route by Christian kingdoms towards Al-Andalus and by Mozarabs towards the north. It connected the cities of Emérita Augusta (Mérida) and Asturica Augusta (Astorga).
Afterwards it became a way to transport American money (‘la plata’) from the bishoprics of Andalusia and Extremadura to Santiago, and during the second half of the 13th century it began to be used as a route for the pilgrims from those regions. It offers stunning natural landscapes along the region of Deza.
