At the entrance of the Carboeiro monastery, there is a paved trail that descends towards the Deza river. This ancient trail will take you to a centuries-old bridge: Ponte do Demo, which was part of a historical route from the monastery to Santiago de Compostela.
There are many widespread tales about bridges that were built with the help of demons, and a few Devil’s bridges scattered around the globe. These are usually medieval arch bridges characterised by the technical difficulties that were overcome during their building process, by their aesthetic, or by their economic or strategic importance for their area of location.
Normally, these legends tell us about a pact with the devil to build the bridge in return for souls, but once the construction is finished, the devil always fails, deceived and defeated by his opponent.
