The gardens of Pazo de Rubianes were started in the late 17th century in an area next to the palace known as the Pond of the Frogs. Most of the plant selection and the extension of the gardens took place throughout the 18th century, and a passion for gardening was passed from fathers to sons until the late 19th century through new gardening projects and the introduction of new species. Vegetation in Rubianes covers a total area of 40 hectares divided into three sections: garden, farmland and forest. Of great tourist, historic and artistic interest, the current geometrical design of the garden has a labyrinth-style due to Dolores Urcola, who focused specially in the camellias and received the Gold and Silver Camellias in several competitions of the International Camellia Exhibition. The gardens are particularly beautiful during their flowering season in the winter.
