Rising above the landscapes of the Ulla Valley, the Alto da Madanela Viewpoint is one of the best places to discover the vastness and natural diversity of inland Galicia. Located in the village of Pastoriza, at an altitude of around 650 metres, this privileged natural balcony offers sweeping views over the lands of Deza and the Ulla Valley, allowing visitors to admire some of Galicia’s most iconic landscapes. On clear days, the view reaches Pico Sacro and Monte Faro in the Serra do Candán, creating a horizon of remarkable beauty framed by mountains, forests, meadows and small rural villages.
The strategic location of the viewpoint provides a unique perspective over a territory shaped by nature and centuries of human activity. Each season brings new colours and nuances to the landscape, making this site an attractive destination throughout the year for nature lovers, hikers and photography enthusiasts.
The recreational area features picnic tables and barbecue facilities, inviting visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings. At the summit stands a small privately built chapel dating from the 14th century, as well as a traditional stone cross erected by local parish residents, both of which add significant historical and cultural value to the site.
As night falls, Alto da Madanela reveals another of its great attractions. Low light pollution and wide horizons provide excellent conditions for stargazing, offering privileged views of the stars, constellations and the Milky Way.
For this reason, the Alto da Madanela Viewpoint is part of the “Baixo o Ceo das Rías Baixas” Astrotourism Network, an initiative that promotes some of the finest places in the province of Pontevedra for observing the night sky. A place where nature, heritage, landscape and the heavens come together to create an unforgettable experience in the heart of inland Galicia.
